Lamentations 2:14
Your prophets have beheld for you worthless and ineffective visions; and they have not uncovered your iniquity so as to return you from captivity, but they have beheld for you worthless and misleading oracles.
At the time Jeremiah is writing Lamentations, Judah has been taken over by Babylon as a punishment for their rejection of God. They turned to idolatry, following after other gods, along with having prophets speak to them only what they wanted to hear. This is a warning for us as it was for them. In our lives, it is easy to only go to people or ideas that feed into our already set opinions or actions. This can end up being a destructive path. As Jeremiah warns us here, we have to uncover our iniquities so that we can ask for forgiveness and change. If we only get told that what we are doing is right when God tells us it isn’t, we are hiding our sins and will remain captive by them. We need to pray to our God to help us uncover our sins, to make them know so we can change and follow our God with a pure heart. This will save us at the judgment in the end, where all of our actions will be revealed.
