Mark 12.41-44
41 And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the crowd was putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums.
42 And a poor widow came and put in two lepta, which amount to a quadrans.
43 And calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all those putting money into the treasury;
44 for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on.”
What could we ever give God that He doesn’t already have? He created everything, He owns everything! There are things in this life that require money or wealth in order to function. The temple was no different (nor our church houses today); it required funds to keep things going. But we know that God will make it work out for His name’s sake. So it is not about the amount that we are contributing; it is the heart that is behind it. The widow gave less than the rich as far as monetary wealth; but she gave more than anyone else because of her heart behind it. What great faith she had! She gave everything she had, not a penny left behind. When have we ever given everything to God? Have we had faith that He will give generously back to us for survival? We do not know what took place after Jesus pointed her out, but we know that if her faith never faltered, she will be rewarded in the kingdom a hundredfold. Hopefully, we can look inward and ask, “Do I have a heart free from the bonds of wealth to give it all to God?”,”Do I have the faith God will provide for me?”
