March 25th, 2025: 1 John 3.16-18

1 John 3:16-18
16 By this we have known love, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
17 But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?
18 Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.

The blessing of the world’s goods comes from one place: God. We are promised to be taken care of like the ravens or the grass of the field. That doesn’t mean we may have all the things we think we need or desire to have; but, we will have enough from God. At times we may find ourselves in a better position than our brethren. What is the heart we should have in that position? John clearly states the mindset we are to have: when it is within our means to help a brother in need, we are to do it. Not holding back because we don’t want to be lacking in goods but, giving generously with love. To withhold despite being able to help is a shut heart along with lack of faith. Our God has promised us He will take care of us. We should be willing to take care of others and be that blessing in their lives, knowing God will continue to help take care of us. If all we do is “show” our love for our brothers and sisters by speaking positive words, but we never give our time or possessions to help, we don’t really love them. Reflecting on how we think about the things we own, are we showing the love God has asked of us to show to each other? Not just materially but as Jesus showed us, giving our lives (time, energy, etc.) to our brethren as well. Showing them we love and care for them. Let us pray to our God to help soften our hearts and show us the right attitude to all those around us.
