Mark 13.33,34
33 “See to it, keep on the alert; for you do not know when the appointed time will come.
34 “It is like a man away on a journey, who, leaving his house and giving authority to his slaves—each one his task, also commanded the doorkeeper to stay awake.
Our Lord Jesus, on a day or so before his crucifixion, gave some prophetic words for his disciples. On ending his talk, he warned them to stay alert at their tasks and awake in order to be ready for his return. He likened it to a man on a journey. Jesus began his journey when he was taken up to heaven after God raised him from the dead. Yet, as his parable explains, he did not leave us without instruction. Before Jesus left, he tasked all of his servants as to how they are to live their lives. He instructed us as to how we can be honoring to him and to his God and our God; and, how to behave towards each other while spreading the gospel of the kingdom. We are to stay alert, awaiting his return while completing the tasks that he assigned to us. We must not forget that we have a job to do, given to us by the master. Let’s do the work while being awake and ready to welcome back our king.
