May 14th, 2025: Psalm 34.9

Psalm 34.9

Oh, fear Yahweh, you His saints;

For there is no want to those who fear Him

When we fear something, how often do we think that the thing causing the fear is going to provide for us all that we need? Contrarily, our fears often involve the removal of something essential to us like our health, security, or necessities. Yet the psalmist is equating our fear of God to lacking nothing. How can this be? This helps show what it means to fear God. To fear Him is to acknowledge His greatness and power, to humble ourselves that we have nothing in ourselves to sustain life, and so to show the respect and obedience to Him as our Creator and provider. In doing that, we will lack nothing. God will provide and take care of us in this life and ultimately in the next. To fear God is not to be a coward in a corner, awaiting the next punishment; but to acknowledge and respect Him as our Father and the provider of everything. In this mindset, we truly will lack nothing.
